Drugstore vs High-End Foundation: Is the Price Difference Worth It?
The foundation market spans a vast price range — from under £5 to over £50 per bottle. The honest answer is that price does not always equal performance. Several drugstore foundations outperform their premium counterparts in independent wear tests.
What high-end foundations typically offer: More sophisticated packaging, wider shade ranges, unique technology (e.g. skincare-infused formulas), and in some cases superior blendability or skin-like finishes. Premium brands also tend to invest more in shade diversity and undertone variety.
What drugstore foundations do well: Many excel in coverage, longevity, and skin-type suitability. Products like the L'Oréal Infallible 24H and Maybelline Fit Me consistently perform exceptionally in real-world wear tests at a fraction of the price.
Our guidance: Match the formula to your skin type rather than the brand tier. A £12 foundation that suits your skin type will always outperform a £45 formula that does not. Invest more in products that stay on for hours (foundation, concealer) and save on products you use lightly or infrequently.
Mascara Comparison: Lengthening vs Volumising
Mascaras are broadly divided into lengthening and volumising formulas, though many modern mascaras claim both.
Lengthening mascaras use a thinner, lighter formula with a long-bristled comb wand. They separate lashes and add visible length without much bulk. Best for those with dense but short lashes, or those who prefer a more defined, natural look.
Volumising mascaras use a wax-rich formula and a dense, round-bristled brush. They coat lashes fully and build dramatic thickness. Best for those with sparse or thin lashes who want impact. The trade-off is potential for clumping if over-applied.
Waterproof vs regular: Waterproof formulas resist humidity, sweat, and tears — essential for weddings, festivals, and summer events. They do require an oil-based or dedicated makeup remover to avoid lash loss through rubbing. Regular formulas are gentler on lashes daily. See our mascara application tutorial →
Concealer Comparison: Liquid vs Full-Coverage Stick
Concealers come in a range of consistencies, each suited to different concerns and skin types.
Liquid concealers are the most versatile. Light-to-medium formulas are ideal under the eyes, where a heavy product would crease. Full-coverage liquids can cover blemishes, pigmentation, and dark circles. Apply with a small brush for precision or blend with a sponge for a skin-like finish.
Stick concealers are thicker and more heavily pigmented — useful for covering significant pigmentation, birthmarks, or severe redness. They require careful blending to avoid a cakey result. Best applied with a small brush and set with powder immediately.
Colour correctors: These precede your concealer. Peach/orange neutralises blue-purple under-eye circles. Green neutralises redness and blemishes. Lavender brightens sallow or yellow tones. Always apply colour corrector first, then layer concealer on top. See concealer tips by skin type →
